The Wihuri story is a history of accomplishment, conglomeration and commitment. It tells of the accomplishment of three outstanding members of the Finnish business community and the thousands of others who have followed in their footsteps. They oversaw, and oversee the birth and growth of Aarnio Oy into the diverse assortment of companies Wihuri is today. The elements of heritage and tradition complete the Wihuri story, which is a dedication to commitment: commitment to family, to company and colleagues, to community and to the customer. The story begins with the accomplishments of four notable figures: Hjalmar Aarnio, pioneer in the wholesale trade in Finland, and the company Aarnio Oy he founded in Kaarina, Finland in 1901; Honorary Counselor of the Maritime Antti Wihuri and his international business cluster; and Honorary Counselor of Trade Rakel Wihuri and the link her lifetime of accomplishment provided between Aarnio and Wihuri. The work of these three has been successfully carried on by Antti Aarnio-Wihuri, who was the key person in starting Wihuri´s packaging business.
In 1961 occurred a significant step in the conglomeration of present day Wihuri
– Aarnio Oy was merged with those of the company’s eventual namesake to form the Wihuri Group. The name became official in 1975. Since then the Group’s structure has changed radically. Today Wihuri is a combination of the older members: Wihuri Oy Aarnio, Wihuri Oy Autola and Wihuri Oy Witraktor, and the newer companies: the Wipak and the Winpak Groups, Wihuri Oy Machine Tools, Wihuri Oy Power Products, Vilakone Oy and Wihuri Aviation.
Wihuri Head Office has situated in Kulosaari Helsinki since 1964. Please read more about the history of the Wihuri House:
Wihuri Foundation and Research Institute
Alongside the company’s business operations, Wihuri contributions to Finnish culture have been substantial. The Wihuri Foundation established by the company’s founders supports science, the arts, and culture with annual grants. Their monetary value alone puts them on a scale comparable to the grants awarded by the Nobel committee.
Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation established Wihuri Research Institute in 1944. The Institute focuses on delineating the basic mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases.
